What is a Website?

A website consists of three elements:

  • Name. Every website will have a unique name, which is known as the 'domain name". For example, the name of this website is 'astraconsultants.com'. The purpose of the name is to identify the website, and it acts as an address. Because your website has a unique name, someone only needs to type that name into the internet browser in order to find your website. For more details, click on Domain Name.

  • Content. This is the information part of your website. For example, a description of your products and services. In other words, Website Content what visitors see when they go to your site.

  • Server Space. The files on your computer are stored on a 'disk drive' which is part of your personal computer. Likewise, your website 'content' is stored on a 'disk drive' which is part of the internet. These disk drives (with some extra equipment attached) are known as servers. As servers are relatively expensive, instead of using an entire server, you likely will use only some space on an existing server, which is the 'server space' for your website. Normally your website is designed and stored on a personal computer, then uploaded to the server. Once your website is uploaded to the server, it is visible to people using the internet.
